Hessie!

Marie Hess works at Frost Valley every summer for the month of August. She does everything and anything, but mostly, these days, helps in the camp store (what we used to call "the canteen"). I've known Marie well for a long, long time and am utterly amazed by her. She looks the same and works just as hard as ever. She and Carl came to Frost Valley to live there in December 1968. Carl was our Maintenance Director and Marie worked in the kitchen and laundry. The photo here could have been taken any year between the early 70s and mid-80s. While the loads were spinning, there was Marie, in her lawn chair, chatting with campers and staff passing by, and later, when afternoon snack was delivered from the laundry, she pretty much got to see and to know everyone in camp. She was a fixture, truly. When she and Carl moved into the home just down the road from the Castle she joined Bill and Eva Devlin as the families who lived at camp year-round. Soon Halbe and Jane Brown moved their family to camp full-time and in '73 Chuck and Joy White joined them. Carl died in '77 of cancer (stay tuned for a Carl Hess entry, which deserves its own space for sure) and Marie stayed on until 1984, when she retired. "Retired"? Well, Marie keeps working all year at one good project or another. We're lucky to have her with us still every August. I've never ever known anyone as stalwart, nor as hard-working.
