grandmother day
Villages often create lite "theme days." They do mostly regular activities but they stick with a theme all day and evening. In Lakota there is now a "tradition" of Grandma Day - and those who are heading toward this phase of life might see this satire as very broad and ridiculous, as the organizers freely admit. But however sensitive you are about age, you have to admit that it's very funny. These 11 year old girls walk around in the image of themselves they conjure up as elderly. They dance to old music. They walk around aided by canes. They tell young "whippersnappers" to get off their lawns. At the end of the day they happily escape: "Free from the Home!" they chant as they walk across the field and startle everyone. Anyway, the staff turn their hair grey with powder and look remarkable. Here are a few photos and one video from Lakota's recent theme day.
