Kaylee Phelps, our program director, is responsible for organizing the staff (CITs and program staff ["activity counselors"] primarily) to help collect the campers' luggage from the villages on check-out day. It's the end of session 1 and we're doing our departure process for the first time this summer.
Last night was a gorgeous cool (almost cold!) night. Sitting around with the Lenape staff at 1 am, at their CQ fire, I looked up and saw the Milky Way with amazing clarity. In fact, I went around to all the villages that had fires. Most of the conversations were not about staffers' plans for the holdover weekend off; indeed, the talk was about the kids. This kid or that. This one learned to get along with his peers. That one, enduring the divorce of her parents and missing her dad, learned some independence and ended up wanting to stay another session. This other one realized he wanted to be a CIT. 1:45 am and I got back to my place. 7:30 am came quickly and it was time to don a staff shirt and help out, where I can, with the departure of some great kids and the quick come-&-turn-around visits of some great Frost Valley families. If they send their children here, they can't be all bad.
